Glossary…

Greenware

Clay object that has not been fired. Very soft and fragile. Oddly enough, not actually green... We'll look into that for you.

Bisque

Rhymes with "risk". May translate from the French as "Pottery in training" Greenware that has been fired once. Much less fragile but should not be juggled to impress your friends. It is, however, durable enough for painting and handling by your average 3-year old.

Underglaze

Interchangeable term for ceramics paint. Largely used to make ourselves sound more knowledgable

Overglaze

Final step before firing; coating applied to bisque to "seal" the piece ensure food safety, and watertightness. It also gives the piece its smooth, glossy finish.

Firing

The final step in creating a ceramic piece. The painted, glazed bisque is baked at ridiculously high temperatures to bring out all of the vibrancy of the colours, and to complete the sealing process of the glaze.
